Annual Field Meeting

‘Engineering Geology of North East England'

Friday 16th July – Sunday 18th July 2010

 

The annual Engineering Group Field Meeting will convene on the evening of Friday 16th July 2010 and will be of interest to engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, engineering geomorphologists, civil engineers, coastal engineers and geologists of all levels of experience. The meeting will consider various aspects of the engineering geology of the North East England and will visit a variety of sites of engineering and geological interest.

Programme

We will convene at 8.00pm in Grey College, Durham University for an informal drink and introduction to the geology and engineering geology of the area presented by Dr David Toll and colleagues from the University. The evening will provide an opportunity to meet fellow delegates.

• Travel will be by coach each day to selected localities around the Durham area led by Dr David Toll and supported by Prof. Dave Petley and Dr Mark Allen from Durham University and Bryan Claybrook.

The delegate fee will be £80.00 for waged delegates and £40.00 for un-waged delegates and full-time students. The fee will cover the running costs and lunches on both days. Please contact the convenor as soon as possible to book a place on the field weekend. Cheques should be made payable to the Engineering Group, Geological Society and should be for the registration fee and conference meal only, (please note that cheques which include accommodation will be returned). Your accommodation bill should be settled directly with the University Conference Centre on departure. It is proposed that on Saturday night that delegates convene for a Meeting Dinner in Grey College. Please would you advise on booking if you wish to attend the meal? Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food will be available.

Meeting accommodation is detailed below with en-suite single rooms having been reserved in Grey College. Please advise on registration your reservation requirements.

A short introductory lecture on the Engineering Geology of the Durham and North East area. (Dr David Toll, Durham University)

Saturday 17th July

Sunday 18th July

Coastal instability (North Yorkshire Coast) with a visit to instrumentation site at Boulby

BIONICS project (instrumented embankment to investigate the effect of climate change)

Second Tyne Crossing

Northumberland Coast

Weardale - Fluorspar mining

 

Lunch will be provided on Saturday & Sunday.
